SOUL UNLIMITED Radioshow 593

 // Reutlingen

African soul, Afrobeat and highlife from both Ghana and the European diaspora are the musical coordinates of this program.

Shortly after the opening, the first new release, an interesting compilation entitled „Africamore“, presents Afro-funk inspired recordings by Italian bands and musicians from 1973 to 1978. The makers of the Four Flies label have once again done a very good job and put together a harmonious selection of musical gems with Afro-Caribbean flair. Then it’s on to Leibzig, where the band Oluma is based. On their new album „Cooking Time“, they have created an impressive mixture of Afrobeat, funk, jazz and Brazilian music, which I find quite convincing.
I was really looking forward to Jembaa Groove’s second album. On „Ye Ankasa | We Ourselves“, they have subtly realigned their sound and integrated a pleasant jazzy vibe into their highlife sound. The whole thing grooves quite relaxed and lets the sun shine in our hearts. Wonderful!
The Konkolo Orchestra from Zurich quickly caused a sensation with their album „Future Pasts“, which was released in January, and consequently the vinyl version was quickly sold out. It is now available again and therefore it is high time to present it here. A solid Afrobeat and Highlife production that is also quite forward. A number of guest singers and guest musicians round off the album. A great album!
The sound of Sai Galaxy is somewhat more electronic and, above all, club-oriented. The Australian producer released his second EP „Okere“ on Soundway a few weeks ago and all four songs are excellent. Some legendary African musicians are also involved here. Rob and Steve Monite, for example, are involved in the two songs presented here. This EP from Sai Galaxy is definitely a „must have“.
The reissue of the album „Party Time“ by Papa Yankson is an all-round beautiful thing and also a perfect transition to the next main topic of the show: The compilation „Ghana Special Vol.2“. After Kalita Records has already released two interesting compilations on the subject of Burger Highlife with „Borga Revolution“, the Soundway label is now also at the start with an excellently compiled compilation. In the 1980s, many musicians left Ghana due to the political and economic situation and mostly emigrated to Europe. There was also a strong scene of Ghanaian musicians, especially in Germany. Access to studios with modern electronic equipment gave rise to a new, electronic version of highlife. On „Ghana Special Vol.2“ you can hear numerous exciting tracks that were created between 1980 and 1993. A great compilation and an important addition to the two „Borga Revolution“ compilations. Have fun listening!
